News site is an education-based resource to assist individuals
who may be at risk formesothelioma, asbestosis,
or asbestos-related pleural disease.
Mesothelioma
is an extremely dangerous form of lung cancer that derives
from exposure to certain asbestos fibers that penetrate
deep within the layers of the lungs. The body is unable
to dispel the fibers, which eventually cause an inflammatory
condition in the lungs. This condition is thought to
be responsible for the resulting tumor that can form
either around the lining of the lungs (pleura), the
abdomen (peritoneum) or around the heart (pericardium).
The tumor is very difficult to expunge from the body
and can destroy these vital organs.
Every
year, at least 10,000 people worldwide will be diagnosed
with malignant pleural mesothelioma, a result of
asbestos exposure. This figure is conservative according
to experts, and the number of mesothelioma patients
is expected to continue to increase due to the 20-50
year latency period exhibited in mesothelioma sufferers.
